The role and metrics of the offensive line

These ratings assume the offensive line has four main objectives:

Open holes for the rushing game
Identify, adjust to and negate blitzes
Protect the quarterback for a reasonable amount of time
Win and hold blocks as a unit

The scores and ranks come from four pass statistics, four run statistics and overall block win rate. Each team is standardized in every metric to give a Pass Score, a Run Score and a Block Score, so the average score in each is 0.00.

Run blocking metrics

An offensive line that cannot run block and create opportunities for ball carriers finds itself forced into a lot of predictable pass-blocking situations.

Rushing Yards Before Contact / Attempt: The ball carrier matters, but the size of the hole — the time until the first defender can make contact — is primarily the line's work.
Runs of 10+ Yards / Game: Lines that can pop the big running play are rewarded. Grinding out four yards at a time is fine, but big runs are normally the result of big holes and good blocking downfield.
Stuffed %: An inverse metric: the lower the value, the higher the score. Lines that are stuffed for no gain or a loss put the whole offense in a hole.
Success %: How often a running play gains 40% of the yards needed on 1st down, 60% on 2nd, or 100% on 3rd or 4th — keeping the chains moving.

Pass blocking metrics

Four metrics measure how the line identifies, adjusts to and negates pressure.

Blitz %: A line that faces a lot of blitzing scores higher here — it measures what it has had to face while producing its other numbers. It is the least insightful metric of the set: it tells us what the opponent did, not how well the line answered. A line that cannot handle the blitz gives the points back in Blitz Deflection % and average time to throw.
QB Pressure %: Hurries, knockdowns and sacks together, divided by pass attempts, scrambles and sacks. Lines that allow the least pressure score highest.
Blitz Deflection %: A metric you have never heard of — I made it up: 1 − (Blitz % / Pressure %). If every blitz led to pressure, the two would match. A line holding pressure BELOW the blitz rate is negating blitzes and keeping pressure off the quarterback outside them. It measures the theoretical negation, not counted blitz pickups.
Average Pocket Time: Time to throw and time to pressure, averaged — how long the quarterback actually had.

Overall block win rate

Perhaps you think everything above is nonsense and overall block win rate is the true measure of an offensive line. It carries double weight in the total for that reason, and it is shown here beside its pass and run halves.

Overall Block Win %: The unit's win rate across all blocks, counted twice in the total score.
Pass Block Win %: The same measure on pass plays alone.
Run Block Win %: And on run plays alone.
