NFL 2023 – Rushing – Receiving Rankings & Ratings

Here is a quick rushing – receiving unit ratings and rankings using pro-football-reference advanced stats.  In both rushing & receiving ratings, we are looking at the entire unit.  So for Rushing, that will include quarterback & RB rushing stats.  For receiving it will include TE and RB receiving stats in addition to WR.

The rushing ratings have 5 metrics:

• TDs / Attempt
• 1st Downs / Attempt
• Yards Before Contact / Attempt
• Yards After Contact / Attempt
• Attempts / Broken Tackle

For the final score the standardized scores for each stat & the following formula were used:

Rushing Rating = TDs + 1st D + 0.5*(YBC) + 2*(YAC) + BT

This gives the rusher only 1/2 credit for the Yards Before Contact value, but awards 2x the Yards After Contact value.  The theory being that the offensive line is responsible for half the yards before contact, while the rusher is on his own after contact.

To make comparison easier, here is the same chart with just the scoring values.  The YBC & YAC seen are the full values PRIOR to halving or doubling.

NFL 2023 – Team Receiving Rating & Rankings

The receiving ratings have 8 metrics:

• Yards / Target
• TDs / Target
• 1st Downs / Target
• YBC / Target
• YAC / Target
• YAC %
• Targets / Broken Tackle
• Drop %

For the final score the standardized scores for each stat & the following formula were used:

Receiving Rating = Yds/Tgt + TDs + 1st D + 0.5*(YBC) + 2*(YAC) + YAC% +  BT + Drop%

This gives the receiveronly 1/2 credit for the YBC value, but awards 2x the YAC value.  The theory being that the quarterback is responsible for half the YBC, while the receiver is fully responsible and can use his talents on YAC.
